Cabinet Approves expansion of Ayushman Bharat: All Seniors 70+ Now Eligible for Rs5 Lakh Insurance

The Union Cabinet has taken a significant step in healthcare by approving the expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to include all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income. This move marks a major advancement in India's pursuit of universal health coverage.
Ayushman Bharat, the world's largest publicly funded health assurance scheme, aims to provide comprehensive healthcare, particularly for rural and vulnerable communities. The program offers health coverage of up to Rs5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.
Under the new developments announced on 12 September 2024, eligible senior citizens will receive a distinct card under the AB PM-JAY scheme. Those within families already covered by AB PM-JAY will get an additional top-up cover of up to Rs5 lakh per year, exclusively for their use. Seniors not part of existing AB PM-JAY family coverage will be provided with a cover of up to Rs5 lakh per year on a family basis.
The scheme offers flexibility for seniors already benefiting from other public health insurance schemes like CGHS, ECHS, or Ayushman CAPF. They can choose to continue with their current scheme or opt for AB PM-JAY. Additionally, seniors covered by private health insurance policies or the Employees State Insurance scheme are also eligible for AB PM-JAY benefits.
To access these benefits, individuals can find eligible hospitals through the official Ayushman Bharat website https://pmjay.gov.in/. The process involves selecting the state, district, and type of hospital, followed by searching for specific facilities. Hospitals on the Ayushman Bharat list provide cashless treatment to eligible beneficiaries.
