The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced an extension of the deadline for Universal Account Number (UAN) activation and Aadhaar seeding in bank accounts until December 15, 2024. This modification comes through a circular dated December 4, replacing the previous deadline of November 30.
The extension applies to a critical process that is mandatory for employees to avail benefits under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme introduced in the Union Budget 2024-25. The circular emphasizes that every EPFO subscriber must have an Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number, which requires activation through the member portal.
This activation provides employees with a comprehensive single-window access to multiple facilities. Subscribers can now easily view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claim statuses in real-time.
The Aadhaar seeding process is crucial for direct benefit transfer (DBT) schemes, ensuring that benefits can be directly transferred to the beneficiary's bank account. This move aims to streamline and simplify the process of accessing provident fund benefits.
In addition to the deadline extension, EPFO's Central Board of Trustees recently implemented several significant changes. These include modifying the interest payment process, now allowing interest to be transferred to subscribers up to the date of settlement, rather than just the end of the preceding month. The board has also adjusted claim processing procedures, ensuring that interest-bearing claims are now processed for the entire month, reducing pendency and promoting timely settlements.
Furthermore, the board has issued new guidelines for investments in Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) sponsored by Public Sector Undertakings, indicating a broader approach to fund management.
The deadline extension provides employees with additional time to ensure their UAN and bank accounts are properly configured, minimizing potential disruptions to their provident fund benefits.
