The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced another extension for the deadline to activate Universal Account Numbers (UAN) and complete Aadhaar seeding with bank accounts. This extension applies specifically to employees seeking to access benefits under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme.
Extended Deadline Details
The revised deadline for UAN activation and Aadhaar-bank account linking has been set for June 30, 2025. This marks yet another extension in what has been a series of deadline postponements by the EPFO authorities.
According to an official EPFO circular dated May 30, 2025, the competent authority approved this timeline extension to provide additional time for employees to complete the mandatory requirements for ELI Scheme eligibility.
Understanding the Universal Account Number
The UAN represents a unique 12-digit identifier that EPFO assigns to each qualifying salaried worker. This number functions as a consolidated access point, allowing employees to manage their provident fund accounts seamlessly across multiple employers throughout their professional journey. Through this single identifier, workers can monitor and access their PF balances regardless of job changes.
UAN Activation Process Using Aadhaar Authentication
Based on guidance from a Press Information Bureau release from November 21, 2024, employees can activate their UAN through an Aadhaar-based verification system. The activation process involves these sequential steps:
Initial Setup:
- Navigate to the official EPFO Member Portal
- Locate and select the "Activate UAN" option under the "Important Links" section
Information Entry:
- Input your UAN, Aadhaar number, full name, date of birth, and mobile number linked to Aadhaar
- Verify that your mobile number is properly connected to your Aadhaar card for complete access to EPFO digital services
Verification Process:
- Consent to Aadhaar OTP-based verification
- Select "Get Authorisation PIN" to trigger an OTP delivery to your Aadhaar-registered mobile
- Complete activation by entering the received OTP
Upon successful completion, users receive a password via SMS to their registered mobile number. This activation unlocks comprehensive access to EPFO's digital ecosystem, including PF account management, passbook downloads, online claim submissions for advances and withdrawals, personal information updates, and real-time claim tracking capabilities.
Mandatory Requirement for ELI Scheme Benefits
The UAN activation and Aadhaar-bank account seeding process is not optional for employees wanting to access Employment Linked Incentive scheme benefits. This scheme, which operates under EPFO administration, requires completion of these steps as a prerequisite for benefit distribution.
The ELI scheme was introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the July 2024 Union Budget presentation. The program encompasses three distinct categories - ELI schemes A, B, and C - each designed to provide specific employment-related incentives to eligible workers.
This mandatory compliance ensures that only verified and properly documented employees can access the financial benefits offered through the government's employment incentive initiative.
