Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced a groundbreaking expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), extending health insurance coverage to all Indian citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their economic status.
The initiative, launched on Dhanvantari Jayanti and the 9th Ayurveda Day, introduces the Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card, which provides free medical treatment worth up to Rs5 lakh annually per family. This universal healthcare program is expected to benefit approximately 6 crore senior citizens across 4.5 crore families throughout India.
Senior citizens who are already covered under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional top-up cover of Rs5 lakh per year, which they won't have to share with family members under 70. Those currently enrolled in other government health schemes like CGHS, ECHS (Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme ), or Ayushman Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) can choose to either retain their existing coverage or switch to AB PM-JAY.
Key Features

- Free treatment in hospitals with coverage up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually
- Additional top-up coverage for seniors already enrolled in AB PM-JAY
