Time is running out for taxpayers who haven't yet connected their Permanent Account Number with their Aadhaar identification. With fewer than ten days until the year-end cutoff, those who delay face significant financial and administrative challenges.
The deadline falls on 31 December 2025, after which unlinked PANs will become non-functional starting 1 January 2026. Tax authorities issued their most recent guidance on 3 April 2025, making this connection mandatory for anyone whose PAN was issued using an Aadhaar number before 1 October 2024. For others, the required completion date had already passed in May 2024.
Financial Impact of Delayed Action
Taxpayers attempting to link their accounts now must pay a late fee of one thousand rupees, as the original deadline has already elapsed. Failing to complete this process results in PAN deactivation, triggering a cascade of complications.
Major Restrictions from Inactive Status
An inactive PAN creates multiple obstacles in financial operations:
- Tax return submissions may be rejected by revenue authorities
- Tax deduction and collection rates increase substantially
- Documentation for deductions becomes unavailable, and credits won't reflect in official tax statements
- Opening new bank accounts becomes impossible
- Cash deposits limited to 50,000 maximum
- General banking transactions capped at 10,000
- Credit and debit card applications will be denied
- Mutual fund companies and brokerage firms may suspend customer accounts
- Know Your Customer verification processes face disruptions
