The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has issued an urgent warning about fraudulent activities targeting National Pension Scheme (NPS) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) subscribers. The regulatory body has identified multiple schemes where scammers are exploiting two common desires among pension holders: complete withdrawal of pension funds and promises of unrealistic returns.
These fraudulent operations utilize various digital channels, including fake websites, mobile applications, and social media platforms, to target unsuspecting citizens. The scammers often employ sophisticated methods to replicate official communications, making it challenging for the average person to distinguish legitimate from fraudulent content.
To combat these threats, PFRDA has established clear guidelines for identifying authentic communications. The authority exclusively uses the sender ID 'PFRDAI' for SMS communications and operates solely through www.pfrda.org.in. For NPS-related inquiries, citizens can contact 1800 110 708, while APY-related questions can be directed to 1800 110 069.
The authority has outlined several protective measures for pension holders. These include using only official PFRDA websites and applications, avoiding sharing sensitive personal information or PRAN numbers, and exercising caution when encountering offers of unrealistic returns. In cases where fraud has occurred, PFRDA recommends immediate action, including disconnecting compromised devices from the internet and freezing affected bank accounts.
For victims of cyber fraud, PFRDA has established a clear reporting protocol. Complaints can be registered through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in), where victims can file detailed reports using their Indian mobile numbers. Additionally, the national helpline 155260 is available for registering complaints. Importantly, victims can file complaints at any cyber-crime cell regardless of their location or where the crime occurred.
Financial crime experts praise PFRDA's initiative as a crucial step in protecting pension holders. However, they suggest improvements, including making information more accessible through visual aids and multilingual content, simplifying technical language, and strengthening enforcement measures against perpetrators.
This comprehensive approach to cyber security awareness represents PFRDA's commitment to safeguarding pension holders' interests while promoting financial literacy and cybersecurity consciousness among subscribers.
